Free script: Prepare Soft Bodies

Prepare Soft Bodies is a small companion script for Newton3, the physics engine for After Effects.

Description
This script prepares a shape layer (or multiple) for a soft body simulation in Newton. It creates many small solids and places them at regular distance along the shape. It also connects the original shape path to the solids using expression.
After running the script, open Newton and add the appropriate joints to create a soft body. When you are back to AE, the original shape will be automatically modified to follow the animation of the small solids.

User Parameters

The script provides a Preferences dialog that allows you to customize the following parameters:

  • distance between 2 consecutive solids
  • size of the solids
  • color of the solids label (fixed color or random color for each path)
  • Bezier tangents method in case of Bezier path (maintain the original tangents or choose adaptative/”auto-bezier” tangents)

Usage Tips

  • When a path is processed, the created solids have the same color so you can select them easily in Newton using the C shortcut.
  • Create a soft body in Newton by connecting the small solids with distance and/or pivot joints.
  • Use the Shift + Click shortcut to create a cycle of joints (i.e., an additional joint is created between the last and the first selected body).
  • In the Joint Properties panel:
    • Turn off Collide Connected
    • For pivot joints, turn on the Enable Limit parameter (you can try to change the limit values)
  • It often helps to increase the Sub-steps parameter in the Global Properties/Solver panel, and the Collision Tolerance too.
  • If your objects are moving too fast, use the Time Divider to slow down the simulation. You can speed it up back in AE.

Automate the creation of layers

LayerGenerators is a collection of 3 tools for After Effects to automate the creation of layers.

These tools are particularly useful when a large number of layers is required, and when these layers cannot be obtained by just duplicating an existing layer.

They have been designed during the development of our plug-in Pastiche, when we realized that it would be great to have a tool to quickly generate a bunch of elements to start playing. They can be used to create text layers, solids (possibly with masks and effects) and vector shapes.

AlphabetFromText

This tool generates ASCII alphabet with the font style of the  elected text layer. Each character is placed on individual layer. It also provides options to generate digits and punctuation marks, to center anchor point in layer content, and to use shape layers instead of text.

Solidity

This tool allows you to easily create a large number of colored solids, or to colorize existing layers (solid, text, or shape layers).
The generated solids can possibly inherit properties from an initial solid (e.g., masks or effects).
The Colorize option allows you to color the created solids or existing layers. You can select one the 60 color presets, or create your own palette.
For text and shape layers, you can choose to affect the Fill color, the Stroke color, or both.

VectorIcons

This tool generates icons as shape layers. You can choose among 3000 vector icons from 6 popular icon sets. Icons can be either created by group (for instance “all brand icons”), or individually.
Since icons are created with shape layer, they can be resized without loosing quality. However, for convenience you can specify the initial icon size. All icons are filled in white.

MAIN FEATURES

  • Intuitive and easy to use: click and go! Avoid tedious and repetitive work
  • Fast and robust: create hundreds of layers in a matter of seconds
  • Each tool does one thing, but it does it right
  • Perfect companion for tools like PASTICHE and NEWTON2

POLYLINE

Polyline creates colorful and fully controllable polygonal lines (this is nerd talk for straight lines) that can be animated in After Effects’ real 3D space. This means they can easily weave between your other 3D layers without any fancy comping necessary.  After the polyline is created it can be easily edited. You can edit where it travels in space as well as the color and texture of each segment of the line (or the whole path at once).

Now Apple Silicon M1 compatible and “Name your own price”.

Please Note:  This product has been discontinued. We do not provide support for it anymore.

Polyline constructs a rigged 3D polyline from the motion path of a layer.
Polyline creates a straight segment between each pair of consecutive keyframes.
Segments are precomp layers controlled by expressions (position, scale and orientation).
They are connected to each other using a corner pin effect and powerful expressions.
Polyline also creates null layers at each corner of the path, so you can dynamically modify the polyline by moving the nulls in 3D space. As each segment is a slice of a path precomp, you can easily change the appearence of the polyline by modifying each segment individually or the whole path at once.

Polyline interface provides a set options allowing you to control the width of the polyline, choose one the color themes, create closed polyline, and more!
Thanks to the null objects, you can also animate the segments very easily.

Limitations

  • The total length of a polyline cannot exceed the maximum size of a composition, i.e., 30,000px.
  • Some display issues sometimes appear with the built-in corner pin effects used by Polyline (Corner Pin and CC Power Pin).
  • Some motion paths yield degenerate cases for which a nice polyline cannot be constructed (for instance, a chain of orthogonal segments in x, y, then z plane).
  • Modifying segments rotation can sometimes show important texture deformation.

Note on the trial version: The trial version is fully functional except that the number of segments is limited to 3, and the Closed Path option is grayed out.

This After Effects script allows you to transform the content of the selected text layers into ASCII art. Credits must go to Patrick Gillepsie who wrote the hard part with his implementation of the FIGfont spec in JavaScript.

You may want to take a look at all fonts provided by the script: ASCII Fonts Grid

Create Gear

While browsing one of the Adobe Community forums to get info on Illustrator scripting, I came across this post and immediately thought it would be cool to port his script to After Effects. Gears are great shapes that can be used in various situations, but they are even better when you can animate them…

Create Gear panel

Note: There is an AE shape preset called Gear, but it uses 3 Polystars, 1 Ellipse and 3 Merge Path to create the gear (which makes adjustments more difficult).

MORE TOOL

Connect Layers

This script connects the selected layers with segments or triangles created with shape layers.

It was originally created to visualize Newton2 joints but as you will see, it can do much more.

Rope

Creates a single shape layer with a path connecting the selected layers (2D only). Use AutoBezier or Tension options to get rounded joint style.

Spanning Tree

Computes minimum spanning tree and draws each edge with a shape layer (2D and 3D support).

Triangulation

Triangulates the selected layers and draws each edge with a shape layer (2D and 3D support). If you want filled triangles (not just the edges), activate the Fill Triangles switch in the Options dialog. By default they will be filled with the same color, but you can also choose a source layer to colorize them.

Note that for functions that create shape keyframes (Triangulation with Filled Triangles turned on, and Rope), keyframing is done within the comp work area.
